There is no doubt that classic Disney movies are fun to watch. However, what’s even better than the funny dialogue and the catchy songs is the fact that they also teach kids a number of essential life lessons. Let us take a look at the five best classic Disney movies to watch with your children.
Pinocchio
Originally released in 1940, Pinocchio is as classic as it gets. It is all about a wooden puppet who wants nothing more than to become a ‘real boy’. He is told by a beautiful fairy that this will only happen if he proves himself to be « brave, truthful, and unselfish ». The movie is all about the consequences of giving in to temptation and Pinocchio’s quest to do what’s right with the help of his ‘conscience’, a dapper cricket known as ‘Jiminy’.
The Princess and the Frog
This is one of the newer Disney films, which will make it all the more appealing to your little ones. The focus of the story is learning how to love someone for who they are on the inside, rather than loving them for how they look on the outside – an all-important lesson that every child needs to learn.
Pocahontas
The lyrics from the song ‘Savages’ demonstrates the way in which racism has plagued the world and how damaging it can be « What can you expect from filthy little heathens? Here’s what you get when races are diverse. » Pocahontas brings this to everyone’s attention when she states « Look around you! This is where the path of hatred has brought us. » The film teaches kids that even though we may not look the same, or come from the same background, we are all people and, when it comes to those who are different from us, there should be no place for hatred in our hearts.
Mulan
This movie is particularly good for young girls to watch disney movies online, as it teaches them how women can be just as strong – if not stronger – than men. It follows Mulan who goes to the Chinese army in the place of her elderly father. She does this knowing that if a woman is found impersonating a soldier, the penalty is death. In the end, she is the one who excels, she is the hero, and she is the one who saves China from total destruction at the hands of the Huns.
The Lion King
The Lion King is one of those Disney classics that is truly timeless, teaching our little ones all about bravery, the value of family, and how to believe in oneself. You might want to cover their eyes when Mufasa dies though. It is still considered to be one of the saddest moments in movie history!
So grab your children, pop one of the aforementioned films into the DVD player, get some popcorn and delicious fruit ice lollies ready, snuggle up and enjoy the magic of Disney.
